Lewis and Clark passed through the town on their way down the Trinity River in 1869 but did not stop at Weslaco Settlement; they instead reached Marble Falls about two miles downstream from where they stopped (the current day intersection of FM 512 and US 183). In 1890, a post office called "Wesley" was established in honor of Joshua Weslcoco and his wife Elizabeth (née Powers). The post office remained open until 1918 when it became "Wesley Place". In 1907–08, Methodist Episcopal Church built a church in Wesley Settlement which still stands today; it served as the community's first church until its replacement was constructed in 1938. The original Methodist church building still stands today next to help meet needs for Habitat for Humanity which has been located there since 1978 In 1916 an express train ran through Weslaco stopping at all stations en route to Dallas/Fort Worth; one passenger mentioned that "the people hereabouts were very friendly." On July 5th 1946 local women organized themselves into "The Guild" toaster ovens being used for Sunday morning services as early means of providing food for families during World War II; bake sales followed thereafter to support war efforts On November 3rd 1951 local girls baked loaves from butter brought back by soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss during the Korean War In 1959–60 local men started a gas station & restaurant near Cherokee High School with ingredients & gasoline provided by Army officer Rufus Sutherland
