In 1919, Webster Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Gun show which was attended by prominent figures from across the United States including President Woodrow Wilson and Representative John Dingell (Fowler). At this show, representatives from around fifty gun company manufacturers exhibited their products (Ibid). In 1935, The National Rifle Association purchased an old shotgun factory located in Tyler for $2 million dollars. This allowed them to establish a manufacturing plant within Webster County which produced pistols as well as rifles (Wright). The first public school in Texas was opened at Webster in 1849 by Reverend John Fenton Shortridge. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers burned down the townshouses on Elm Street and Northside Drive in order to protect their supplies from Union forces. This event is known as the Battle of Webster. After the war ended, many new families arrived in town and more schools were built. By 1870, there were over 1,500 people living in Webster.
