Webster, Texas is a town located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The name "Webster" comes from Englishman Richard Webster who settled there in 1853. The first post office opened in 1855, and the town was named for him. Webster was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1858. In 1865, it became part of the new Mexican territory after Mexico's victory over Great Britain in the American Civil War. At that time, it had a population of 3,500 residents and was governed by a board of commissioners appointed by Governor James Polk. When Mexico seceded from the Union in 1861, Webster became one of its many towns annexed into Confederate Texana Territory (later Oklahoma). In 1865–68, when Union forces occupied Midland County during the war against Confederacy, they burned most of Webster while leaving some buildings standing. On November 25th 1870*, incorporation as a city took place with a population of 10,000 people*. After two more incorporations – on December 17th 1880* and March 6th 1890* – which brought the total to 12*, growth stagnated until World War II when businesses began to Again increase and soon after 1945 when Webster reached its current size with 14+, thanks largely to immigration from Latin America*. The Post Office Department destroyed all but two buildings on Main Street between 1915-1916 due to fire caused by an incendiary bomb dropped on Dresden during World War I100 years ago today! Today much has changed since those days including downtown being completely rebuilt following devastating damage done by Hurricane Harvey back in 2017! In 1925, Webster incorporated as a city, and grew rapidly despite efforts by local officials to keep its citizens isolated from outside influences. By 1930, Webster had reached its peak population size with over 2,000 residents. However, during the Great Depression ensuing World War II (1939-1945), Webster's economy declined due to lack of resources and job opportunities. During the later years of its existence, however, Webster struggled with increasing social and economic problems that led to several homicides until finally achieving majority white status in 1984.
