Webb, Texas is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area. The Webb family settled in the area that now Webb in 1881. In 1902 they sold their farm to J.W. Webb and his brother John Fenton Webb who built a home on it and started farming there until 1925 when they bought an additional piece of land east of their original farm and developed it into what is today Webb. In 1907 Wm Hargrave opened a general store in Webb which continued to be a major economic center for many years before being replaced by Texaco gas stations during the late 1990s boom period when Amarillo became more industrialized. The post office has been open since 1888 and was known as "Amarillo" until 1907 when it changed its name to "Webb". It remained under that name until 1951 when it changed back to "Amarillo" after oil production shifted from Houston to Gregg County because of state law prohibiting oil companies from using local addresses on forms filed with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC).
