Webster was founded in 1871 by Captain John H. Webster and his wife Anna Lattimore Webster as a small community on the banks of the Trinity River. The town grew rapidly during the early days of railroad development in San Antonio County and reached its peak of population in 1915 when it had a population of 10,000. However, during World War I Webster suffered from economic hardship due to military hostilities and lost much of its commerce and industry; however, it recovered quickly and reached its present size by 1920. In 1925, Captain John H. Webster donated land to be used as an airport which became home to then-San Antonio International Airport (now Travis Air Force Base). The history of Webster goes back even further than that – it was founded as an agricultural village on what is now known as Buffalo Bayou on November 5th 1871 by Captains John H. Webster and Anna Lattimore Webb as a place where they could graze their livestock while they built their first house (later named after them). At first there were only two families living there – Captains Websters and Mrs Webb’s family – but soon others arrived and started farming too: slaves from Arkansas brought over by Captain Webb for work on his farmstead; Scotsmen who had settled along Buffalo Bayou before American independence; German immigrants who had come through Starr Pass Road during World War I; Irishmen from County Tipperary who had landed at Port Lavaca on board USS Pawnee in 1917; Italian men from Rome who had set up shop near Deming Street since 1919; Japanese Americans who lived adjacent to Mission Valley until 1942 when they were transported inland to Topaz Ranch because of World War II hysteria…….. All these people contributed something unique or special to this small community that was started just south of downtown San Antonio with just 20 people! In 1915 the charter members voted to rename their town “Webster” after Major General George Washington Keyes (1795-1868), commander general during Mexican War (1846), governor general under Ulysses S Grant (1865-1867), commanding general at Fort Sam Houston/San Jacinto Heightsduring Texan Rebellion(1915) & 1st Lt Gov Beaumont Henry Smith’s father-in-law & namesake for nearby Beaumont Place [today’s Mount Pleasant Cemetery]…. After many years serving in various capacities within the town government including mayor (1924-1927) & Boardman Moments Mayor pro tempore 1922-23 he retired effective September 14th 1927….. As mayor Pro Tem he also served 2 terms on Bexar County Commissioners Court 1924 thru 1930……………………………………………………………After retiring from politics Captained John H.Webster sold all his property northward along Buffalo Bayou for $10 per acre which formed today’s city limits…………Now one can go any time day or night without feeling like they are intruding upon someone else’s personal space…………….There are still numerous streets named afterCaptainJohnHWebb throughout this small city with everyone having an opinion about whom these streets should be named AFTER…………………..Today most people refer to Webster simply as “thetown” although sometimes people use “Webster TX" when referring specifically to that portion of the city located within City Limits
