Webster, Texas is a town located in Hamilton County, Texas. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from John Webster, an American politician and lawyer who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1893-1901 and as Attorney General of Texas from 1901-1903. The first settlers in what is now Webster were Dutch families that arrived around 1800. In 1836, John Crain settled about two miles east of present-day Webster on the banks of the Brazos River. The pioneer settlers were farmers and their livestock ranchers who raised corn and cattle for meat and milk until railroads came to Crawford County in 1865 and transportation became available for goods that would then be transported by wagon or train to markets all over the Western United States. In 1881, when Hamilton County was created, Webster was one of its original townships. It remained a part of Hamilton County until it was annexed by Fort Worth in 1907. At this time, Webster had a population of 3 residents (1 male/2 female). By 1960, however, the population had grown to 11 residents (4 males/5 females). Today’s Webster community sprang up around those early pioneer beginnings with land sales beginning in 1903 followed by construction on a schoolhouse which opened its doors to students on October 1st, 1903! That same year also saw incorporation as a village with voting privileges!! It wasn’t until 1924 that Webster became an incorporated municipality under Republican leadership !! On November 2nd that year – during just one term as Mayor – George Mclendon announced he would not seek reelection after serving 10 years !! In 1928 incumbent mayor Wm Ladd ran unopposed for another term but he too resigned due to ill health on January 15th 1929 after serving six years !!! After leaving office Mclendon donated his home called “The White House” to Howard University which continues to use it today as their main academic building !!! After World War II many new homes were built especially within walking distance of church services such as Stonington Methodist Episcopal Church located just off US Hwy 281 next door !! Today there are over 100 current residents living within walking distance form nearly all aspects including grocery stores including Walmart & Dollar General; banks such as Wells Fargo & HSBC; restaurants such as Tex Mex restaurant & Olive Garden; Masonic Lodge #3 - currently used by members for social events only; professional medical offices; tennis courts (& recital hall) etc…
