Webster is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. It was named for John Webster, a landowner and first settler in the area. The city's population was 9,627 at the 2010 census, down from 10,492 at the 2000 census. The estimated history of Webster goes back to 1824 when John Webster founded what is now known as Webster County on the Red River in what is now Wise County. In 1836, following Mexican-American War hostilities along the border between Mexico and Texas, Webster County became part of New Mexico Territory following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ceded all but about two million acres (800 km²) of southern California to Mexico; this included what is now Webster County. In 1847, James Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) east of present-day downtown Webster from John Webber for $5 per acre ($160/km²). This town began as an agricultural community with small homes near present-day Elmira Street and Houston Street. By 1860 it had developed into a small town with a sawmill, gristmill and cotton gin on Commerce Street northwest of downtown. That same year civic activist J P Richardson founded the first school in this community - Aided School No 7 - which served grades kindergarten through 8th grade until 1912 when instruction transitioned to high schools status statewide under then Superintendent Amos Stroud’s “Pupils Reorganized Act” (1892). When that act changedgrades to 12th through 16th grades in 1912, only high schools were allowed within one mile (1 km) of any public school serving students anywhere within New Mexico Territory including Webster Township; thus giving rise to our current educational system! A post office called Webster was established in 1865 by L D Pryor; it closed operations in 1893 because its ZIP code did not include anything within modern day Webster City Limits! In 1907 an addition called Mrs Blythe Prairie opened up north of Main Street northeast corner First Avenue between Maple and Georgia Streets just west OF Weber Creek making it sister post office To Mrs Blythe Prairie & Co.; however due to lineal descentWebster City Limits continue TO be part Of The City Of Dallas !!! The first settler in what is now Webster, Texas was John Wesley Powell who came in 1859. The town was named for him. In 1865, General Antonio L. Webb founded the town of Palestine which became the biggest and most populous settlement in Webster. The population of Palestine peaked at over 2,000 people but it slowly decreased as a result of the railroad being built through the area.
