Weatherford is a town in Beaumont County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,541 at the 2010 census. Weatherford is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Weatherford was organized on November 17, 1881 by a group of settlers who had long desired to settle in this area. Many of these men had been born and raised in nearby Seminary Hills and were drawn to the prospects of developing this new township because it would include a well-maintained courthouse and jail, as well as an educational institution that could provide them with more opportunities for advancement than they could find elsewhere. The first post office was established in Weatherford on December 3, 1881. In 1886, the town built a dam to impound the Trinity River so that water could be diverted for irrigation purposes. This project also included building a church and school which were both completed in 1888. In 1902, the town erected its first water tower which still stands today). By 1907, weather conditions had become too severe for farming operations to continue and many residents decided to move away from their homes due to lack of access to clean water or other resources needed for subsistence agriculture; however, some residents did decide to stay and start businesses such as grocery stores and transportation companies within the community. In 1909-1911 two large floods destroyed much of what remained of downtown Weatherford (although some remnants remain today) but fortunately no lives were lost or any damage done beyond superficial flooding throughout most if not all buildings inside the limits of town limits. These natural disasters represented one significant turning point in downtown's history; prior thereto it had been largely residential with businesses located along Main Street serving primarily local customers until then-recently constructed commercial properties became available on Waco Avenue (now Knowles Street). Today, Weatherford is home to a population of about two thousand people. The town has experienced many changes over the years, including growing cotton production during the 1930s; a period of heavy oil exploration and production in the late 1960s and early 1970s; and its current economic decline. All these changes have led to some interesting aspects of local history that are worth exploring: 1) The first weather station in Weatherford was built in 1853 by Captain John W. Weatherford himself! This significant milestone shows how important weather data was at that time – it helped to help farmers adapt their crops to different climate conditions (and even predict how bad things might get). 2) After being incorporation into Amarillo County in 1915, Weatherford quickly became one of the most important towns in southern Texas for cotton farming! Cotton production played an ever-important role throughout much of Texas during this time period – it was one of the main sources of income for many families hereabouts. 3) During World War II, many residents served in various military roles within or outsideof Weatherford – some even went on to become famous figures within their communities (such as Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Kapp). Many local businesses also benefited from wartime boom times, such as aluminum smelters located just north of town which employed many locals during those days (the smelters closed down after the war). 4) Finally, over recent decades there has been an increasing trend towards light manufacturing within nearby towns such as Amarillo (and other neighboring cities), which has had negative consequences for downtown environments around larger metropolises like Dallas or Houston.
