Weatherford history dates back to the early 1800s when settlers arrived in the area. One of the earliest businesses in Weatherford was a livery stable, which operated until the mid-19th century. In 1881, local farmers started a cattle ranch and began shipping their beef to nearby Fort Worth. The business grew rapidly and by 1900, it had become one of the most important dealers in Texas. In 1951, Hurricane Donna passed through Weatherford and destroyed much of downtown. However, due to its destructive power, Hurricane Donna also initiated an intense appreciation for architecture within the community as many buildings were replaced with more recent designs or renovated entirely. By 1969, dating back to World War II era Defense Department barracks that remain standing on Archives Drive (now Hwy 290), Weatherford had become home to over 30 civilian agencies associated with government service including law enforcement agencies such as sheriff's departments; firefighting; water supply; waste control; public health inspectors; agriculture research institutions; POW/MIA camps and other national security sites located throughout South Texas statewide Since then there have been significant updates/constructions such as: 1) A $5 million project completed in 2009 that included installation of new roofs on both existing buildings along Highway 280 between Weldon Road and Nacogdoches Road totaling 6 acres - making it one of largest renovations ever done in town 2) The construction of a $10 million dollar golf resort adjacent to Main Street (now State Highway 290) which opened up in 2013 3) A brand new library addition completed in 2018 which includes 4 floors dedicated exclusively to research & library instruction
Weatherford is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Llano River. The population was 507 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Texas and its second-largest city after Dallas. It is also the smallest incorporated municipality in Texas. Weatherford's nickname "The Birthplace of Texan Oil" likely comes from its location at an important oil well site in east central Texas during the early days of petroleum production. According to legend, a cowboy named Hugh Campbell discovered oil here in 1901 while out prospecting with his horse and buggy. That year, Texaco began producing natural gas at nearby Hubbell Field and as a result, many Texans came to live near Whitney Bayou and listen to local stories about oil discoveries being made all around them. In 1919, when Hurricane Hazel destroyed most of Houston, Weatherford became one of only a few communities within easy driving distance to take advantage of new resources that were developing such as shale gas reserves outside of Houston metropolitan area - something that still continues today! In 1939, when WWII began for America, United States Army command decided that Weatherford would be an ideal location for several training exercises due to its strategic location on both sides of the Llano River between San Antonio and Austin - ensuring that Texans who lived close by could always see action! The first major exercise took place here on October 6th – just two weeks before war started! Subsequent exercises have taken place here ever since including Operation Neptune’s Spear which led up to Desert Storm back in 1990; Operation Provide Comfort which aimed to reduce drug trafficking throughout Central American through McAllen County;Operation Just Cause which toppled Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide;Olive Brigade which featured 2nd Infantry Division soldiers deployed into Sierra Leone during Liberia’s civil war;Desert Shield I – aka Gulf War I – where Desert Storm occured on February 17th 1991; and Hurricane Ike “mega storm” where over 100 mph winds caused extensive damage across much of central TX including parts of Weatherford! Today weatherford is home to many businesses such as ExxonMobil Refinery (the largest refinery in Texas), Tyson Foods Inc., ChevronTexaco (the parent company for Shell Oil) Plastics Factory and vast tracts of open land used for grazing or housing development along with some small businesses left abandoned due mainly to low energy prices (-40¢/kWh vs electricity rates average US $3/month). Despite these challenges there are also many opportunities for growth given recent investments by town council members such as plans for: 1) A downtown revitalization project spearheaded by Councilwoman Darlene Henson ;2) An expansion into adjacent annexed municipalities - bringing faith based services closer to residents (including children living without parents);3) Creation Of A Heritage park serving as a Gateway To The Arts & Memory Trail For All Those Who Live In And Visit This City ;4) Expansion Of Job Training Programs Available thru Trinity University & other traditional employers

In 1907, the first post office in Dawson County was established here and the town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1950. Today, weatherford offers a variety of shopping experiences such as farmers markets and antique stores which are open year-round with several festivals each year including the rodeo season round (held every other weekend), carnival games (the largest being an oilrig) during Christmas time, and two golf courses - one near downtown and another just outside of town on White Sands Road.
