Weatherford is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of Corpus Christi. It was founded in 1874 by J.D. Weatherford and named in honor of his brother-in-law, Sam Houston. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Red River, which made it a vital shipping and manufacturing center for Texas lumber companies and cotton growers. The post office at Weatherford was established in 1879, and the first hospital opened in 1902. In 1907, Hurricane Edna caused significant damage to parts of downtown Weatherford but no loss or injury to people or property occurred within the city limits; this event is generally considered to be one of the greatest recoveries from natural disasters ever experienced within Texas metropolitan areas. During World War II, Weatherford became one of the largest shipyards in Texas with production starting up immediately after hostilities began in Europe on September 2, 1939. The war produced many Victory ships including USS "Texas" (BB-35) and USS "Prairie" (CL-2). After World War II ended, various large factories were built here such as Shell Chemical Company's plant that still employs over 1,000 workers today (the plant closed in 1984), Lockheed Martin's Litton Industries Plant Number One which produced missiles until 1991 (!), Dow Corning's Corning Glass Factory until 1984 (closed down), Texaco Inc.'s Texaco Refinery until 1986 (!), TX Instruments & Components divisions making electronic components before they were spun off into their own company called TE Connectivity before being acquired by Qualcomm Incorporated The current mayor is Eddie Gonzales who has held office since November 2014
