The first post office was established in 1879 and served portions of Dallas County as well as Vernon County. In 1903, it became a town with a population of 1,500 residents. In 1907, it became a city with a population of 10,000 residents. The town of Weatherford, Texas was founded in 1836 by Jacob and Rebecca Weatherford. The original settlers were the Houstons, who had come to the area from Tennessee. By 1840, the town had become a center for cattleraising and farming. In 1851, the Texas Legislature designated Weatherford as a county seat. The county was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as president of Mexico. In 1872, following Reconstruction policies in Texas, Weatherford became an all-white city Limits district. When black Texans regained their rights after the Civil Rights Movement began in 1965, they moved into the city limits of Weatherford; however, many white residents still continued to reside there until 1975 when they were annexed into adjacent San Antonio.
