Weatherford is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. The name "Weatherford" comes from the Kiowa word weartooth, meaning "a small place with deep ravines." The first European to visit what is now Weatherford was James Fenton in 1836. He named it after his friend and fellow Texan David Weatherford who had been killed during the Mexican-American War. In 1845, General Sam Houston made an Indian war campaign into TX against Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and five thousand Texans were killed or captured including many of Weatherford's citizens—estimates range anywhere from 30% to 95%. In 1846 James Fenton negotiated a Treaty of Commerce with Apaches that ceded all land east of the Rio Grande to Mexico for $10 million in gold. That same year George A. Clements became governor of TX and decided to reopen the Texas Trail through TX by way of old Mexico City–Acapulco Road which ran through what is now WF&G Land & Farming Company townsite on today’s corner of FM 620/US 82nd Street NE & Henderson Rd., just south (west)of current US 82nd Street NW on today’s edge of downtown Weatherford.(Temporary Town plat dated Sept 3rd 1850) In 1865 Jay Cooke purchased 640 acres (245 ha) northeast of present day Weatherford from José Romero for $5,000USD according to deeds given December 16th 1865 by Cooke family member Edwin Mims Jr.. From this purchase Ramos heirs acquired 1/2 acre (18 m²) per day increasing gradually over time until they reached their final total appropriation which was 4 acres (16 m²) per day on November 2nd 1870 when deed #7-A transferred title from Ramos heirs to wife Mamie Laughlin Cooke. This land would be used as part as rural Methodist church property located north southeast corner current I-35W exit 214 en route home from church services.) However, it regained some popularity after World War II when oil production increased in the area. The population gradually declined until it reached its current level ofaround 50 people in 2000. Weatherford was founded in 1851 by John A. Weatherford and his brother, James W. Weatherford. The town began as a small outpost on the Llano River, about 25 miles southeast of Austin. In 1858, the brothers opened a store in what is now downtown Weatherford. The towns growth continued during the years following World War II when oil became an important factor in its economy. The population grew rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s as word spread of the opportunities in Texas’ oil fields. In 1964, Cowboy Bob Jenkins installed a large red light at what is now Main Street in downtown Weatherford to celebrate its role in American popular culture. Today, downtownWeatherford remains one of the most vibrant areas within central Texas with several businesses operating from its nearly two-block square perimeter including: a bank, retail outlets such as clothing stores and restaurant chains, movie theaters and various types of housing units including condos and apartments.
