When Texans arrived in the Lone Star State in 1836, they brought with them their firearms and hunting traditions. The first guns were made from crude hickory logs, but soon began to be fashioned from more advanced materials such as pine and oak. By the early 1850s, weatherboarding had become an important aspect of Texas architecture, and so a number of gun shops were built to provide protection for these buildings against the elements. In 1865, General Sam Houston bought 8 acres of land near Weatherford to create a new Arsenal Complex (now the Weatherford Museum). This was the beginning of what would become one of America’s most significant firearms industries. The complex produced pistols, rifles, shotguns, ammunition and other weapons for both state and federal use until it closed its doors in 1977. In 1836, Weatherford was founded on the banks of the Brazos River. The town was named for General John A. Weatherford, who fought in the Texas Revolution and then served as a U.S. marshal in nearby Dallas. In 1839, weatherboarding began to be used in Weatherford as a way to improve insulation and value properties; it would become an important innovation in American architecture. Naming rights to the river were granted to Weatherford by President James K. Polk in 1865.
