Weatherford is a city in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,433 at the 2010 census. It became a city in 1907. Weatherford is named after General James Fenton Weatherford, who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as governor of Texas from 1879 to 1883. The first inhabitants of what is now Weatherford were farmers and their livestock. By 1886, there were over 100 businesses in the town and it had a population of 2,500. In 1907, the city fathers decided to make weatherfords their official name and incorporation occurred that year. The oil well near present day Weatherford was discovered on July 3rd, 1911 by J.B. Lovett while working for Texaco Oil Company with others from Houston drillers under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Knechtman watertightizing an exploratory well located about 8 miles northeast of modern day Weatherford on Buford field just east of FM1960 (now TX 527). On November 17th 1912 Mayor Waddell certified that oil had been encountered at 4 wells drilled on Frenchman's ledge about 12 miles northwest of present day Weatherford on Red Cow Creek field; this information has never been substantiated but lovett’s report does suggest early exploration activity in this area
