It was a significative event as it marked the beginning of a new era in which Texans would engage in gunfights and muzzleloaders would become an important part of local militia forces. The first shots were fired from a shotgun and soon thereafter pistols became popular weapons among farmers and ranch hands. Ammunition for revolvers was scarce so many men turned to handguns for protection. The availability of ammunition only made caliber conversions more necessary as firearms became more sophisticated. By 1860, revolver shootings had become such an everyday occurrence that they were recorded in newspapers as “gun-running” events. Rifle shooting continued until 1865 when General James Fenton ordered all infantry units to discontinue its use because rifle bullets were becoming too noisy for effective Long Range Fire Support operations. The last time rifle fire was heard from Weatherford was on May 15, 1865 when Confederate troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Boggs attacked a Union detachment at Gowen’s Mill Road Bridge over Buffalo Bayou.
