There is a long and varied history of ammunition in Weatherford, Texas. Ammunition has been used for centuries to support both military and civilian endeavors. In the early 1800s, rifle owners in this small town began purchasing arms from various suppliers. One such supplier was John Ballinger & Sons Arsenal, located in nearby Haskell. Many of the old-time rifles that were stored here still exist today, and are used by members of the local militia and private citizens alike. Ballinger also produced artillery ammunition during this time period. The company’s cannons were used to bombard Fort Worth during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1868, Weatherford became an incorporated city under the name of “Weatherford, Texas”. At this point, ballistics research laboratories had begun to be established throughout Texas as a result of technological advancements during that time period. As Oklahoma Territory began to secede from Mexico in 1861, new demand for rifle ammunition increased; Ballinger responded by expanding his operations into Texas. In 1902, Ballinger merged with other munitions manufacturers including Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Remington Arms Company to form American Munitions Corporation (AMC). From then on until 1988 when it merged with Brownells Inc., AMC was one of the largest producers of ordnance products in the world. Although its product line included everything from shotguns to mortar rounds, most importantly it manufactured ammo for firearms which allowed Texans to protect themselves against Native Americans as well as bandits and other threats posed by organized crime groups operating out west at that time. Today American Munitions Corp is headquartered in Richardsonburg, Tennessee but its roots can be found all around Weatherford where employees still produce projectiles for firearms and hunting purposes as well as supplying parts for other businesses across the state capital city!
