Weatherford is located in southern Texas, about 25 miles from the Mexican border. The town's name comes from a creek that flows through it. In 1836, General Sam Houston named Weatherford after his friend and mentor, Colonel John Weatherford. The town flourished during the early years of the Republic because of its natural resources: oil and natural gas. However, World War II destroyed much of this prosperity as war production increased demand for munitions and other materials in nearby Fort Worth and Wichita Falls. By 1945, however, Weatherford had resumed its role as a small community with a population of around 1,500 people. Today the town functions primarily as an agricultural center with a few businesses providing services to the community such as health care, banking and transportation. The first permanent settler in Weatherford was James Auld who came overland from Kentucky in 1837. He founded what is now known as Aulds Grove near present-day Arlington Heights on land purchased by him from David Crockett for $2 per acre (about $40 per hectare). By 1840 there were six families living in Weatherford; all except one left when Black Hawk War forced relocated Texans to leave their homes east of San Antonio due to Indian attacks.(1) In 1846 O’Donnell married Anna Ladd at Stonewall Jackson’s Church in which event Kenedy Oldham became Anna O’Donnell’s second husband.(2) Not long afterwards James Mosely established himself on land adjoining Anna O’Donnell’s property.(3) Also during this time several other families moved into what would become known as “The Village at Little Elm Creek (now called Arlington Heights), scattering some 10 settlers there between January 1st and December 31st of that year.(4) "O'Donnell" means "from Ireland." "Ladd" means "daughter." The fact that these women married outside their home country shows just how integrated America was then with Irish immigrants making up about 6% of American society at that time.
