Waxahachie, Texas is a small town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, there were 10,551 people living in Waxahachie. The community is named for General George Washington and his aide-de-camp Major John Forbes Waxahachie. It was first settled by Texans in 1845 as a farming community on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1861, when Baylor University opened its new campus in Waxahachie and nearby McKinney, the town became its primary student center. When Baylor left for Dallas to become TCU in 1925, Waxahachie retained some vestige of autonomy until it merged with McKinney into that city's newly created city government on February 1st of that year. The construction of I-10 through downtown Dallas increased commercial activity and transportation needs around downtown Waxahachie so much so that businesses erected large adaptive reuse buildings such as courthouse annexes and Hospitality House (now known as "The Ritz"). By 2007 only two out of four storefronts remaining from those days still served commercial purposes; most had been converted into apartments or rental units since then. Waxahachie, Texas is a small town inTX located about an hour southeast of Houston. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census and 8,569 at the 2000 census. Waxahachie is part of the Houston metropolitan area. It is named for General James Fenton who fought in the Mexican-American War and against Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna in 1847. Waxahachie has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries and was first settled by settlers in 1836 as part of a larger land purchase from Tejanos (native Texans). In 1881, the town was named after Rear Admiral George Wilburn waxing poetic about his experiences while onboard USS Constitution during its trip around South America under Commodore John C. Fremont's command. The early years of Waxahachie were difficult; many people lost their lives due to Indian raids or disease epidemics that swept through Texas during the antebellum period. However, over time, development began to occur and businesses opened up including a grocery store, post office, two churches and several residences until it reached its current size in 1886 when oil production commenced nearby and wax began being produced commercially on an industrial scale. In 1907–08, much to the dismay of residents who felt they had nothing to gain from industry other than increased noise and pollution,[2] a park was created which still remains today - Waxahachie Park - with playgrounds, tennis courts (1948), baseball diamond (1973) as well asogging lakes which provide fishing opportunities for locals and visitors alike year-round! While some aspects have changed over time such as increased traffic on Main Street or less affordable housing,[3][4] overall life within Waxahachie has remained relatively stable throughout this century with only one notable exception: starting in 1984 there was significant growth associated with oil exploration offshore which led to increased traffic along Main Street while also causing some homes near refinery sites to be abandoned or sold at below-market prices
