The name Waxahachie comes from an Apache word meaning "place where the sun never sets." The community was established in 1881 by whites who desired to establish themselves along the banks of the Brazos River. The first post office was opened in 1882 and the population increased rapidly due to its location near what would become San Antonio. In 1907, a school named for General Sam Houston was built in Waxahachie and it quickly became one of the most popular schools inTexas because it provided excellent educational opportunities for Mexican American students. In 1916, Johnnie Cochran won his seat on the Texas state senate from Waxahachie and he used his influence to build a public library within waxahachie limits. In 1934, Congressman Lamar Smith visited Waxahachie and praised local businesses for their contribution to southwestern culture during his congressional campaign against Alice Paul challenger Jack Kemp. In 1938, two brothers founded what would become known as Arroyo Farms which grew corn, beans and other vegetables until it merged with IBM in 1984. After years of decline due to changing industry patterns and locational changes within Big Bend County, Arroyo Farms announced plans in early 2009 to construct a $157 million ethanol production plant that would employ more than 1,000 people over 7 years; this project will provide jobs both inside and outside of waxahachie

Waxahachie is a town in Dimmit County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1872 by wagon train passengers on the floodplain of the White River. The name means "place where they built their huts." The first settler in Waxahachie was Mose Hargrave. He and his wife came overland from Illinois in 1872 and started a cabin near what is now town center. A post office called Waxahachie was established in 1877, and the town took its present name honor of General David Hunter who fought with Maj. Gen George Wallace's Confederate army during the American Civil War. In 1902, William Sitton opened a grocery store at Second and Elm Streets which became a major commercial center for the town until it lost its status as a political subdivision to Dallas in 1959. In 1909, local citizens donated land to build Baylor University's Waco campus which would eventually become one of America's largest universities with more than 100,000 students enrolled today. The university brought many new residents to Waxahachie including architects, engineers and other professionals who helped shape Waxahachie into an important community within Dimmit County for many years to come.
