In 1896, a riflesmith by the name of Harry Redding opened a store on Houston Street that became one of Waxahachie's most important attractions. The name "Waxahachie" is an Alamo-era Indian word meaning "place of refuge." A post office called Waxahachie was established in 1879, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907.
