Waxahachie, Texas is a small town located in McLennan County, Texas. The population was 1,816 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houston metropolitan area. Waxahachie was founded in 1872 by Captain John C. Hays and his wife Anna Payne as a trading post on the Brazos River. In 1887, it became the seat of McLennan County. The post office moved to Waxahachie from Cedar Creek in 1893 and continued to serve there until 1959. The first school in Waxahachie opened in 1896 and served students from both McLennan and Harris counties until 1956 when it merged with the nearby Deer Park School District to form McLennan-Deer Park School District #1. The last school closed in 1999 after serving students from all three districts for over fifty years! The history of Waxahachie can be traced back to its founding as a trading post on the Brazos River by Captain John C. Hays and his wife Anna Payne. In 1872, Hays met Anna while he was stationed at Fort Sam Houston after being discharged from service with the Ulysses S Grant army during the Mexican-American War. Payne had married Hays while she was working as an interpreter for General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s army on June 28, 1867 at San Jacinto Adobe near present day Carthage Road and White Oak Bayou (now Old Main Street). After their marriage, they set up camp along what is now Baylor University Boulevard just outside of town limits before moving into their farmstead in October of that year which they named “Hillsborough” after their maternal grandfather who had died five years earlier while serving with General Austin Blair’s brigade under Colonel James Longstreet duringthe Texan Civil War (1865-69). For several years following their arrival in town, they traded goods with Indian traders living along the Brazos River before settling down permanently around what is now North First Street/Highway 183 east of town limits about two miles south of present day Interstate 452/Upper Loop 610GOParkETx road junction where they began developing what would become their original hometown known today simply as “Waxahachie”! During this time period there were only two schools open within close range of downtown Waxahachie - one attached to Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as Shepherd Center) on High Street adjacent to then Baylor University campus; and another built on land donated by local farmer Rufus Waddell just outside downtown - this latter building providing instruction for grades K-12th through high school students up until 1954 when it reopened as DeKalb Elementary School! By 1876 however, Waddell had died leaving his 2½ acre parcel undeveloped which led to development later that year by A & M Land Company specifically for waxing agricultural products such as cottonseed oil etc.; during this time also some homes were erected including Mrs Beeton's House (later renamed Goodspeed House), Mrs Kittredge's Store & Mansion Annexe; Mr Spriggs' boarding house soon afterwards followed; Dr Fenton's new consulting surgery established itself shortly thereafter next door(to Mrs Spriggs'), not too far away from Epperson Methodist Episcopal Church on Court Avenue also eventually becoming an OldMainStreet movie theater(!) later abandoned & converted into apartments! During this same period various businesses were established including Jardine Cigars store operated by Capt John Bickerton opposite Confederate Cemetery early 1880s onwards; grocery store operated originally by J Willis Higgins Detailers fronting Highway 183 between 1921-1925 (& finally closed 1984); brickyard handled brick making hereabouts beginning circa 1945 earliest documented use date thereof being 1888 prior thereto existing predecessors having been run hereabouts since 1865 or so according to records extant Projections indicate that most if not all these establishments may have still been operating contemporaneously or even longer past our current date! All told there must have been at least 20+ businesses active within easy driving distance either side of downtown main street within just 5 miles radiusOf present day city limits prioritizing agriculture/manufacturing over services/commerce during prewar era !!! It wasn't long after Captain Hays arrived in town though that he decided upon establishing himself commercially based upon exporting agricultural products such as cottonseed oil etc., through his own business venture called "Hay&Payne Trading Post".
