Waxahachie, Texas is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 20,830 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Brazos River and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The area that would become Waxahachie was first settled in 1851 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their new community "Cedar Grove". A post office called Cedar Grove was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1856, John Pemberton founded what became known as "Pembertonville" on a tract of land he had purchased from Alexander Kenedy. The name changed to Waxahachie in 1860 when J.D. Kennedy donated land to the town trustees for a public square and schoolhouse. In 1865, Wacoalczyk Bros., an early cattleman and rancher in Waxahachie, donated 5000 acres (2 km²) of land south of town to build a railroad station and other ranch buildings. The town's first election took place on November 5 that year; James Gorman won an uncontested seat on the Town Council with 98% of the vote. In 1870, Wacoalczyk Bros.' ranching operations were liquidated by foreclosure proceedings brought against him by his creditors; however, he left behind numerous contributing assets including 2 blocks of downtown Waxahachie which still stands today as part of thetown's core district). It is the smallest county seat in the state of Texas and one of the most rural counties in the country. Waxahachie is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Waxahachie was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1868 as a post office called Waco. The name "Waco" was derived from Waco Creek which served as their original Rancho de los Alamo land grant scheme.
