Waxahachie, Texas is a small town located in west-central Texas. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Waxahachie was first settled by Anglo-American pioneers in 1867. The name "Waxahachie" likely comes from the Kichwaha language word "wazuchi," meaning 'place where people gather.' The early settlers were farmers and ranchers who grew corn, wheat, cotton and other crops on their land. They also built few homes but placed great importance on cultural and social activities such as hunting, fishing and trapping. The post office at Waxahachie was established in 1872. In 1907, the town became a county seat under Texan Republic Act No. 99 (the Webb-Kerr Act). At that time it had a population of 2,835 people. During World War II, Waxahachie served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Base hereunder known as RAF Station Wichita Falls (later RAF Earthdome). In 1965, when Wichita Falls County formed from portions of Jacksboro County due to consolidating several local government districts into one entity pursuant to Texan Republic Act No 111 (the Tax Reform Act of 1965), Waxahachie became its only municipality within Wichita Falls limits and continued to serve as its county seat until 1971 when it merged with neighboring Hutchinson County into Wichita Falls County proper (see History of Wichita Falls County - Townships)). A new courthouse and jail were completed in 1984; the old one had been condemned by then-County Judge Robert Lumberland after years of use as an open dumpster destined for landfill. Today's courthouse has been used primarily for administration purposes since then while the jail has been converted into offices space for the county sheriff's department; it remains unoccupied because no longer needed for Sheriff's Department operations. By 1907, when oil began flowing through nearby Comal County, business growth slowed and only one business still remained in Waxahachie by 1925. However, oil production continued to increase and by 1930 there were over thirty businesses in Waxahachie with an estimated population of fifteen hundred people. During World War II, many local boys volunteered for service and their families moved into tents or trailers scattered throughout downtown while they served their country. Some stayed until they were discharged; some returned home within a few months after enlisting; all but two died before reaching American soil during wartime due to disease or combat exhaustion. In 1945, following Japan's surrender, most Japanese troops had been shipped out of Japan and were living among Americans as civilians; those remaining decided to return home rather than face possible punishment from Japan if they surrendered unconditionally like their brethren across the ocean did.
