The name Waxahachie comes from the Wichita word "waxa," meaning "to cover." Waxahachie was founded by German settlers in 1836 as a cattle ranch and farming community. Agricultural production moved to nearby Lake Tomball during the late 1800s, but waxahachie's focus remained on its manufacturing base. This changed with the arrival of Henry Ford in 1939 and his new plant that produced cars and parts for American Motors Corporation (AMC). By 1973, AMC had closed its doors in Waxahachie and most of the town’s residents were forced to flee as part of companywide layoffs. In 1992, local businesswoman Jane Addams donated land to Waxahachie Unified School District which has since become one of America’s most comprehensive school districts. Today, Waxahachie is known for its antique shops and handmade dolls made from local materials such as cotton twill fabric and quilted Mohawk lace. The town also has two churches: First Methodist Church (founded 1836) and St John’s Episcopal Church (established 1865). A general store and hotel were built in the early 1850s. In 1865, it had a population of 1,500 and a school was opened. The railroad arrived here in 1892 and soon made waxahachie an important center for trade with central Texas. By 1900, it had grown to 8,000 people with its own newspaper and two banks. In 1916-1917 during World War I, Waxahachie served as headquarters for General John J. Pershing's American Expeditionary Forces when they liberated Paris from the French occupation
Waxahachie was founded in 1845 by two families of cattlemen, the Haugs and the McCrarys. It became a town after being named for General Sam Houston's old home, Waxahachie Plantation. The first post office was established in 1847. In 1856, the Texas Railroad was built through Waxahachie and it became a center for freight and passenger transportation. The town developed into a small city during the late 1800s, with skyscrapers being erected in the early 1900s. In 1965, Waxahachie merged with neighboring Tyler to form one city-state.
