Waxahachie, Texas is a small town in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It was founded in 1879 by German immigrants and has been a center of culture and commerce for much of its history. The town became an independent municipality in 1907 and held its first municipal election that year. Waxahachie is located at 31°25′21″N 97°59′34″W (31.40609, -97.81411). According to the 2010 census, the population of Waxahachie was 2,904 people. The town was named after General Sam Houston's home state of West Virginia where he had grown up before taking up arms against Mexico in 1837. When Houston reached Texas in 1839, he made his way east to meet with General Zachary Taylor about overthrowing Mexican rule on the American continent. Upon hearing of Houston's arrival, Taylor ordered his men not to let him cross the border into Mexico without fighting. After some skirmishes along the border, Taylor decided to march his army into East Texas instead and rendezvous with Houston at Waxahachie Creek near present day Midlothian County *. Houston arrived at Waxahachie on November 17th 1840* – three days after crossing the Rio Grande† – and camped near its mouth until winter set in†.* He then began construction of what would become known as The Alamo‡*, which served as both a military outpost against Mexican forces south of San Antonio* (*and later Austin*) and also as a symbol of British resistance against Spanish tyranny throughout North America*. On January 6th 1861*, just two months after President James Buchanan had proposed secession from United States under pressure from southern states†*, members of The Alamo itself successfully fought off Mexican cavalry brigade commanded by Pio Pico‡* (*the future Domingo Faustino Cavallo*) until Confederate Major General Lamar Alexander arrived with fresh reinforcements* (*the original Alamo garrison numbered only eighteen men) to retake control†.* At long last Mexican troops were stopped from raiding within Texan borders!(*Garrison losses included nine killed; Alexander lost four killed) In 1863 *Texas seceded from the United States* and becoming an Independent Republic under Mexico’s provisional government nominees Francisco Márquez y Otis** [*Hidalgo County Judge], José Moreno Herrera** [*Alief] On July 16th 1865*** (*just shy of one hundred years ago*) local citizens voted unanimously via referendum to annex West Texas into their municipality!(*This vote followed annexation proceedings begun earlier that year when it was determined that more than seventy percent (of all registered voters) approved annexation applications filed through secret ballot*) When complete, new streets were built straight out from downtown westward like those we see today including: Don Carlos Street (named for Commodore Pedro de Valdivia), Nueces Street (named for Santiago Nueces), Main Street (named for George Washington Harris), Commerce Avenue ( Named for Jnoeph Baptiste Beauregard), Second Streets between Garnet and Ruby Streets (now Trotter Road ), Third Streets between Garnet and Spruce Streets etcetera…………….. Erected primarily during World War II are: Fort Worth Boulevard/I-35 Widening Project #1 & #2 – now part of I-635widening project; Brazosport Drive opposite US 75 Bridge housing development; Veterans Memorial Cemetery adjacent Baylor University
