The name Waxahachie comes from two Cherokee words, qa’an ‘ahe’ which means "place where the water flows" and hachi‘yat ‘ahe’ meaning "ridge of trees". In 1836, a group of settlers from New Mexico arrived in what is now Waxahachie and founded a trading post here. They named their new settlement after Virginius Hodge, an American Revolutionary War colonel and member of the Committee of Five who traveled through Texas in 1783 looking for a route to Santa Fe. At first, there were only 10 people living in Waxahachie when it was founded but by 1830, it had grown to over 100 residents. In 1850, waxahachties voted to secede from Texas and form their own state called Oklahoma Territory. The remaining citizens relocated to other parts of Texas until 1907 when they finally regained their independence as Waxahachie County. The population grew again throughout World War II with the influx of soldiers stationed here during World War II; however, today the population stands at just under 9K residents with most residents concentrated around the townsite around downtown). Some notable businesses that have operated in this small town include Bose Corporation (the company made famous by Ray Charles), Motorola Solutions (manufacturing equipment for telecommunications companies), Texaco (oil refineries) and Phillips Petroleum (the largest gas station chain in America). Waxahachie is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Waxahachie was founded on November 1, 1871 by pioneer citizens of Nacogdoches and oral historian John W. Burcham as an unincorporated community named for its founders- William Burcham (1825-1910) and his wife Sarah (née Waxahachie; 1835-1920). The town site was surveyed in 1872 by surveyor George Hogg and platted on May 20 of that year. Waxahachie experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a municipality on July 1, 1907. The city's first mayor, J.C. "Buzz" Cooksey, led the effort to make Waxahachie one of the most popular small cities in Texas with its high quality education and economy. In 1916, Waxahachie became one of the first municipalities in Texas to provide free public transportation through their municipally owned system known as the "Walking Street Railway". The city experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location at UT Arlington's main campus for research into aerial warfare technology being conducted by then Army Air Forces colonel Don Armstrong and others at Baylor University's Research Park east of downtown Dallas. By 1942, Waxahachie had become home to more than 12000 residents within a radius of 5 miles from downtown Dallas alone - making it one of America's largest 'smart' cities with detailed maps showing all businesses and residents located within easy reach via sidewalks or streetcars In 1951 Mayor Buzz Cooksey announced plans for voter approval for annexation of adjacent Val VERde Valley Village which included much sought after annexed acreage north of I-635 along what is now UptownDallas/Greenway East side; this resulted in unprecedented violence between rival gangs associated with these two villages over control/use of aforementioned property prior to annexation - ultimately resulting in several homicides within both villages over ensuing years until finally achieving permanent peace between these two groups in late 1990s following passage by state legislature earmarked for this purpose Additionally during early 1960s when much attention was focused on area suburban housing developments called 'Shiney Hills', many local homeowners decided against selling their homes near Tax Rd & Beltway Dr because they felt they were not getting fair market value from those developers who were investing money into new infrastructure projects such as expressways & schools instead . Some examples include Texaco heirs Edwin Houston & his son Rex Ewing who refused offers from those developers to sell land near US Highway 67 south Loop #5 approximately 2 miles west of their original home; Perry McDonald who agreed but sold family farmstead about 4 miles east (the present day corner lot across FM 1463 from Walmart Shopping Center) ; other prominent locals whose homes were not impacted include widow Alice Hammons who refused offers from developer Toole Homes Ltd., husband Sam Houston III who sold some land just northwest (along current day Elmendorf Road) , future Governor Rick Perrywhose father purchased 160 acres southeast (near FM 3608 & I-30 exit), future Congressman Ron Paulwhose grandfather also purchased 160 acres southeast (near FM 3608 & I-30 exit), dentist Barney Frank Robinson whose house burned down subsequent year while he was away attending dental school; oilman Harry Crane whose business building caught fire concurrent with nearby shopping center construction project - no injuries occurred . Overall despite some negative experiences during later years following annexation including several skirmishes involving rival gangs still occurring today among our citizenry livingwithin convenient walking distanceof each other . During recent decades many notable residents have passed away including current Mayor Doyle Hood age 96+, former Mayor Buzz Cooksey age 83+,former City Clerk Sarah Winkler age 60+,former City Attorney Tom Kelly Jr., exhumed body found buried under parked car next doorto former Mayor Buzz Cooksey's original home
