It has been part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area since its incorporation as a city on November 1, 1927. The town was named for General James K. Polk's home state of Missouri, which Waxahachie straddles on both banks of the Trinity River. In 1881 and again in 1896, local businessmen bought land east of Waxahachie Creek to create what would later become Arlington County. On January 26, 1907, Arlington County Commissioners voted to name the new community after General James K. Polk because he "served as President of the United States from 1849 to 1853." In 1907 and 1908, local businesses donated land east of Waxahachie Creek for a public park that would eventually be known as Baylor University Park. On July 10, 1914, general election officials reported that 7 out of 11 precincts had cast ballots for president; George Wickersham won with 83% of the vote (the last presidential election in which such voting occurred). This made Waxahachie one of only two American towns to have ever held an open primary election (along with Fairbanks Alaska), beating out nearby Plano by just over one thousand votes (the final results were not released until 1917). A bronze statue depicting George Washington was erected in 1924 outside Mayorial Hall in honor of this event. In 1916–1917 then-mayor John Hynes fought unsuccessfully against annexation by Dallas during what became known as the "Waxahachie Wars". He cited fears that large numbers of Anglo-American people living close to Mexican immigrants would dilute Dutch culture and custom within his city's boundaries while also contributing financially toDallas' political machine. Ultimately annexation passed without any further controversy due to Dallas' lack thereof interest in annexing Waxahachie altogether – having instead decided that it should become part of Arlington County rather thanDallas proper given its proximity to Baylor University Park and its rich cultural history
