Waxahachie, Texas is a small town located in the Lone Star state of Texas. The community was founded in 1892 by John and Sarah Goodloe. The Goodloe family operated a grocery store and cotton gin until 1925. In that year, they sold their business to A.J. Fenton and his wife, Lillie, who continued to run it until 1953 when it was acquired by J.C. Penney Company subsidiary Waco division as part of the auction of assets from the Baylor University basketball team that year. Waxahachie's population peaked at 710 in 1960 but has since declined modestly with the addition of surrounding towns such as Humble and Uptown (now Plano). The most notable resident of Waxahachie throughout its history has been singer/songwriter Willie Dixon, who came to live there in the 1940s while he was performing at Baylor University and later purchased a tract of land adjacent to town for $25 per acre (though some sources claim Dixon paid only $2). When Dixon died in 1973, his ashes were spread over sections of town property before being buried elsewhere in 2003 near where he had lived all his life – just east of Main Street on Greenridge Drive – making him one of few Texans honored with a private burial ground outside Houston proper (the others being former Governor Ann Richards and current Mayor Sylvester Turner). Today, Waxahachie functions primarily as an agricultural center with several thousand acres planted with crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, cottonseed oil production and haymaking; about two dozen businesses employing nearly 200 people produce goods ranging from food services to plastics manufacturing; several hundred residents commute into Dallas or Houston for work each day; and several hundred more enjoy scattered recreational activities including fishing, hunting and boating access along Horn Lake reservoir which provides drinking water for many homes within driving distance.
