From 1890-1892, Waco Haughton served as mayor for one year before being elected to congress from District 2 (Dallas-Fort Worth). In 1907, Waxahachie incorporated as a village under state law No 2387. At that time it had a population of 586 people and consisted of 36 businesses including a dry goods store, three groceries stores, two tanneries and one flour mill according to government records from that year In 1916 an adjacent town called White Settlement was annexed into Waxahachie creating what is now Bastrop County’s largest county seat with a total population over 1 million people today!
Waxahachie was founded in 1892 by Elisha Gray and Anna White. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Brazos River and its natural resources, including oil shale and coal. In 1916, Waxahachie became a city when it was annexed by Austin.
