The town of Waxahachie was founded by pioneers on November 8, 1872, when they landed on the present day site of the city from the ship "Dolphin" during a cattle drive from Wichita Falls to Amarillo. They named their new town for General David Hunter's general store and post office in nearby Fort Worth. Waxahachie began as a small farming community with only 10 residents in 1900 and had only one school until 1928 when it became an all-day public school. The first post office opened in 1901 and for many years it served as both the county seat and center of government for Johnson County before moving to its current location near Interstate 35 south of downtown in 1909. In 1972, oil exploration began onshore within Johnson County and soon after, businesses wishing to locate within walking distance of the natural resources started opening up around Waxahachie proper including a variety of restaurants, bars, convenience stores and an auto dealership that would grow into Chrysler/Jeep/ Dodge dealership fame over time! In fact one can still find these remnants today off I-35 just east of downtown Waxahachie (just past Hobby Lobby). All this growth led to increased traffic volumes which caused problems with surface streets connecting different parts of town; Baker Street became barely responsive while Commerce Street bogged down constantly due to heavy vehicle traffic! Finally late night backups were becoming common on some portions of I-35 between Waxahachie proper and Dallas! To solve these issues additional bridges were constructed crossing Commerce Street between Downtown Waxahachie (west side) and Eastern Avenue east of Main Street; finally dual carriageways were built east & west across Commerce Street between I-35 & Main Road which has greatly reduced backups now during peak hours!!! Today much like then we enjoy what we have - exciting nightlife options without having to worry about large crowds or long delays
