Watauga is a town in Robertson County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Watauga is located on the banks of the Trinity River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north-northwest of Austin and 10 miles (16 kilometers) east-southeast of Round Rock. The first permanent settler in what would become Watauga County was James Witherspoon in 1849. He erected a small log cabin on the present site of Watonga Elementary School in 1850. The first post office in Watauga was established in 1851 and operated for three years under the name "Fayetteville". A courthouse was built in 1857 and operations were moved to present day Watauga from Fayetteville until 1863 when it burned down. The original plat for watauga contained only a single house which served as its nucleus until1878 when land grantees added additional buildings including churches and cotton plantations to the plat. By 1881, there were 9 settlements with a total population of 133 people, all within one mile (1 km) of each other on Big Creek Road between Antioch and Round Rock; this area became known as "the loop". In 1886, county commissioners authorized an irrigation project that increased crop production by 50%. One result was significant improvement in water resources which allowed growth rates to keep pace with economic progress over time In 1907, Watauga became an independent municipality with responsibility for government services including education and fire protection In 1930, local citizens approved annexation by Round Rock so that Watauga would have full city status In 1951 voters passed a resolution nullifying annexations by other municipalities within Robertson County over 100% vote On April 26, 1957 local citizens approved incorporation as an independently chartered city with governance similar to that currently enjoyed by RoundRock with mayoral powers expanded to include zoning authority

The city prospered during the late 19th century as an agricultural center due to its fertile land and irrigation systems. However, from the early 21st century until recent times, Watauga has experienced significant decline due to suburbanization and economic stagnation. Despite this trend, Watauga remains an important cultural and social center within its community and region. The history of Watauga begins with Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1848 on horseback from Ireland. They founded a small town on the banks of the Trinity River near present day Fort Worth because they wanted to be closer to their families but were worried about being outlawed by English authorities for practicing Irish culture. The town quickly became known as "Watauga" after nearby Hillsborough County (now Dallas). In 1870, the first post office opened in Watauga and soon became a major commercial center for surrounding counties. By 1900, many residents had moved out of town due to competition from larger towns such as Fort Worth or Arlington Heights; however, Watauga continued to prosper thanks to its fertile land, irrigation systems, and strong business climate. However, during World War II much of wataugav's infrastructure was destroyed by bombing raids; this led to a rapid decline in population that began in the postwar period. Between 1950 and 1960 alone, Watauga's population decreased by 50%. However, despite these negative trends over time – which have led to some loss of jobs amidst suburban growth –wataugav still experienced some modest success over time: between 1990 and 2000 it grew 2% while Dallas increased 5%. This resurgence has been largely attributed to both local government initiatives like incentives for businesses within its borders (which have helped keepwataugav afloat), as well as new tourism developments like Rocks Canyon National Monument located just outside of town limits which attract millions annually into the area economy.[1] Despite these positive aspects however there remain some key challenges that face wataugav including high unemployment rates among young people[2], inconsistent funding sources for local services,[3], rising housing prices,[4]and lack of affordable housing options.[5]

In 1866, it became part of the newly formed State of Texas and received its current name. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's forces abandoned their defensive positions around Houston and retreated into central Texas. A detachment under Lieutenant Colonel James Hogg burned most of Richmond while withdrawing across the Trinity River. This event is generally considered to be one of the turning points in the Battle of San Jacinto which ended with Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna's conquest of Texas that year
