By 1830, all settlers had moved out of Watauga and it became an unincorporated community. In 1836, James Bowman again settled in Watauga as part of an effort to create a new county seat for Jefferson County which he believed would help reduce Indian attacks on white settlers. Bowman’s cabin was replaced by what is now called the Bowman House Museum which opened its doors to visitors in 1949. In 1865, Rutherford Bainbridge donated land at present day Walnut Creek Shopping Center for use as a public school district. The first school building was completed in 1870 but due to bad weather conditions it never served students well so it was torn down and replaced with another building that still stands today-the Barnes School District Administration Building! In 1916 when cowboy Earle Hardin learned about Watauga he decided to move his herd of cattle from Waco into what is now known as Walnut Creek Park! This event made Watauga one of the most popular places for people to live during those years because people could enjoy nature without having to worry about constantly being attacked by Indians!
