The first school building was completed in 1865 and occupied by the Methodist Episcopal Church until it burned down in 1922. In 1918, Watauga hosted the state fair which drew more than 100 thousand people to its streetscapes and attractions. It was founded in 1836 by John Hance and James Watt as a post office named for Watauga County. Watauga is one of six communities in Montgomery County that were incorporated as cities in 1924. The others are Alpine, Bowie, Cross Plains, Elk Grove Village, and Mission San Antonio de Bacontales. Watauga has a city government while all of the other municipalities have village governments. The first settler to arrive in what is now Watauga County was John Hance who arrived with his family in 1836. He founded what would become Watauga Post Office which operated from 1836-1840. When the original town site was surveyed it consisted of only four small parcels of land totaling . Hance’s son-in-law James Watt also contributed to Watauga’s development and donated three tracts of land totaling . In 1924, when all six towns were consolidated into one municipality under the name “Montgomery County”, Watauga became an official city within that body. In 1954 annexation of portions of Flower Mound and Griggsville allowed for the construction of Interstate 10 across these two villages creating new suburbs east and west of downtown wataugaua This action helped revive downtownwataugaua which had been closed to traffic for many years due to its high pedestrian traffic volume caused by its location adjacent to I-10
