Watauga, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 2,568 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The town began as a wagon stop on the old Watauga Trail. In 1827, Watauga Creek was named for General James Wilkinson and his cavalry unit that fought against Mexican forces during the Alamo campaign. General Wilkinson's home stood near the present day intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and State Highway 361 in Watauga Township. The first school in Watauga Township was built in 1828 by Revd John Fenton and opened to pupils from rural areas of northeast Texas. By 1830, there were six schools in Watauga Township with a total enrollment of about seventy students; one school operated until 1880 due to lack of funding. In 1836, an impressive new courthouse was completed in downtown Watauga; it served as court house until 1902 when it became the county jail. The first telephone service through Watauga township was established by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in 1876 usingconiial lines leased from Dallas Telephone Company (now AT&T). By 1905, all phone service within Johnson County had been provided by telcos such as BellSouth and AT&T! In 1907-1908, two large towns were founded adjacent to Watauga: One was called Beaumont and included portions of present day Beaumont Hills neighborhood; the other was called Marble Falls and became known for its high quality white cotton plantations that produced cottonseed oil until around 1970s when they closed down due to environmental damage done by irrigation runoff from surrounding agriculture land development! 3 other smaller villages/townships existed before 1954: Carthage (1898), Fairview (1899), Purdy (1900), & White Sands (1902). Pleasant Valley which preceded Carthage did not exist prior thereto! Watonga saw its significant growth following World War II when many thousands enlisted into military service throughout North America including those who populated nearby Fort Worth which had become an important military center due to its strategic location on both sides of Baylor University’s Highland Park campus! Many prominent citizens of town such as Drue McClanahan - father-in-law of future Austin Mayor Greg Abbott - Frank Bowers - founder & CEO/CEO D’Angelo Donzelli - Rotary International President Cliff Carter also enlisted into military service contributing materially to the growth & prosperityof their hometown!! Also joining ranks within wartime times were some local businessmen who saw an opportunity for economic expansion post war!! These men formed what would come to be known as "The Drive" or "The Businessmen's Coalition" which helped spur economic development throughout Johnson County thru various initiatives including making certain taxes more efficient while creating new jobs opportunities !! During my tenure as Mayor I have made numerous trips statewide visiting businesses leaders representing each corner Of Texas so that we can better understand their needs & how we can work together best!!

In 1945, after Japan's defeat at Hiroshima, many Japanese Americans were relocated to Watauga following their release from prison camps in America during World War II. Many people who had been born or raised there continue to live there today as Japanese Americans descendants of those who were displaced during World War II

By 1910,watauga had shrunk to its current size as a result of subdivisions and suburbanization; however, it remains an important cultural and economic center within McLennan County.
