Watauga, Texas is a small town in Jack County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Jack County by population. Watauga is located on the eastern edge of the county and borders Gates County to the south and east. The town was founded in 1866 by Colonel John Hance and his family as a cattle ranching community. In 1907, Watauga settled its first crop of cotton and began to emerge as a major cotton center in central Texas. Cotton production declined during World War II but resumed after the war; Watauga became one of America's leading textile towns. The economy then slumped during the 1970s and 1980s as farm prices fell and manufacturing jobs disappeared; however, recent growth has led to increased retail traffic along with new businesses such as a hospital and college. According to 2000 census data, Watauga had an estimated population of 1,562 people living on land that once grew corn for feeder pigs or other livestock: 548 farmers (less than 50% owner operated), 322 ranchers (50% or more owner operated), 83 hunters/gators (10% or more owner operated), 8 contractors/hired hands (10% or more owner operated), 3 scientists (less than 10% employee). Today there are only 9 farmers who still grow corn for their piggery; all others have transitioned into other sources of food production such as fruit trees/poultry operations or tourism ventures In 1950–1951 local residents built a dam across Buffalo Bayou which irrigation water would flow from thenceforth throughout much of Jack County to provide economic stability for Watauga-Gateport area during dry years when no river water could be found downstream from Trinity Rivermouth Dam Wataugans were known for their hot-headedness & quick decisions which often got them into trouble

Watauga is a town in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The Watauga post office was established in 1881. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Watauga comes from the Cherokee word "watana," meaning "water supply." The first European to visit what is now Watauga was Capt. James Bowie in 1792. He and others explored and mapped the area before finally settling there in 1800. In 1851, Watauga incorporated as a town under the jurisdiction of Fort Worth and later Arlington Heights (now Dallas). As time passed and other towns were formed within Jefferson County, Watauga gradually lost its importance as an agricultural center due to development near Dallas or Fort Worth for those purposes. However, it has continued to serve as a small community with excellent educational opportunities until recently. The history of Watauga begins with Captain John Roanoke's Expedition which traveled through this region on their way to find new land in 1607-08 during English Colony's attempt to expand southward into what is now North Carolina. Roanoke's group included many settlers including Captain William Byrd who eventually became the first white governor of Virginia after that state gained independence from England in 1776. A plaque marking Captain Byrd's birthplace still stands on his plantation outside Petersburg, Virginia near modern day Petersburg, VA where he died on October 12th 1815 aged 80 years old having made 8 trips across America alone scouting out new land for English Colonies!
