Watauga, Texas is a small town located in the southeast corner of Texas. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Grayson County to the west, Nueces County to the north, and Boyd County to the east. The climate in Watauga is humid subtropical with warm summers and mild winters. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish settlers from San Francisco who arrived in 1736. After several years of exploration they named this area "Las Antillas" after one of their ships that had made landfall on what is now known as Texas Island. In 1827, General Sam Houston sent Lieutenant Colonel William Hogg overland from Corpus Christi with orders to explore this region for possible mineral wealth. After purchasing land around what is now Watauga from five Creek Indian tribes, Hogg began construction on his rancho de la Vera Cruz which became Houston's capital city in 1828. In 1829-30, Houston built a road through these woods leading southward into Nueces County and he called it la Luz y el Corazon (the Light and Heart). By 1830 about 50 families resided nearHouston's capital city; however most of them left when prices for land increased along Brazos River due to Mexican American gold discoveries farther downriver in Colorado City (later Austin). The community that would eventually become Watauga was founded on December 12th, 1837 by three brothers - George Washington Whitehead, John Whitehead and James Buchanan – while working as surveyors for Andrew Jackson during his presidency. They surveyed 10 acres including today's downtown core which consisted of just a few homes and a schoolhouse at the time. The brothers purchased more land adjacent to their original holdings so that they could build more homes and establish agricultural support systems for their growing townspeople. When Watauga officially became a town it had an enrollment of only thirty citizens but quickly grew into one hundred+. When Texans declared independence from Mexico on November 15th 1839 less than two weeks after Dallas did so, many people decided that they should too because there seemed no point remaining under Mexican rule any longer than necessary given what had already happened within Texas Legislature during its term ending December 31st 1840-41 session where Mexico ultimatley ceded all its possessions east of Rio Grande River back to United States Military Government effective January 1st18 41 inclusive! This decision caused much uproar throughout Texan society as people believed Mexico still held title rights over much of southern Central America not just Tejas & Coahuila!!!
