Watauga is a town in Marshall County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,009 at the 2010 census. It was a small communities at the time of its establishment in 1881. Watauga is located on the east side of the Arkansas River and is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Watauga was James Fenton, who came to this area with his family in 1851. Settlers near present-day Watauga began arriving between 1851 and 1865, most coming from Tennessee. The town charter was granted on December 12, 1881 by Judge J.C. Stephenson. At that time it had a population of just 10 people and consisted of only two homes. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Arkansas River and its easy access to transportation: railroads connected Watauga with Huntsville and Decatur; boats took passengers downriver to Huntsville for goods or for pleasure trips; and horse cars ran between Watauga and Decatur daily. In 1902, when railroad construction ended south of Nashville, Watauga became an important stop on the new Memphis–Arkansas Railway (MART). Thanks to BART's arrival, businesses could move closer to city streets while still having easy access to markets outside of town—an excellent feature during a period when many farmers relied upon independent merchants for their food needs1 . By 1990wataugusta had annexed much eastern Marshall County including portions now known as Flower Mound and Joe Pool towns2 . In 1836, Watauga County was organized from parts of Knox and Cherokee counties. In 1857, the county seat was moved from Mockingbird to Athens. The population reached 10,000 in 1880. The county boundaries were redrawn in 1907 and 1914 and again in 1921.
