In 1849, Watauga was abandoned due to a harsh winter and its strategic location within range of Mexican forces besieging Fort Worth. The town’s few remaining residents were forced to flee into the surrounding countryside or risk capture and execution. Watauga lost its significance as a settlement after its demise but it has been commemorated through local history programs and tourist attractions. Watauga is a small town located in Texas, about an hour and a half north of Austin. The population was 9,973 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Grayson County. The first European settlers in Watauga were Englishmen who arrived in 1798. They soon discovered that their new land had many good resources, including timber and minerals. In 1821, Watauga became part of the Republic of Texas and was renamed to Grayson County after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's home county in Virginia. The population growth during the 19th century led to increased development in the area around Watauga proper, which by 1950 had reached a population of 20,000 people. However, economic stagnation during the Great Depression slowed growth until recent years when oil and gas exploration began to bring jobs into town while also threatening some major residences on Main Street (now Davis Street). Today, Watauga remains a thriving community with its own economy based largely on agriculture and tourism; however, it does have some other businesses that contribute to local life as well such as contracting services out to other towns or counties within Grayson County or providing goods or services for special events or functions such as rodeos or funerals. One popular event each year is the Fourth of July parade which typically features substantial turnout from all over town due not only to patriotism but also because there are many competitions and games available for children throughout the day before parades end with fireworks displays at nightfall.

Watauga is a small town located in Rowlett, Texas. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Watauga has been home to a variety of cultures and religions since its earliest days. The town's history can be traced back to 1836 when it was founded by James Patton and his family. Patton was a general in the Confederate army and he and his family were forced to flee the battle of Gettysburg. They arrived in what is now Watauga County, Texas, and started a new life. The Patton family continued to live in Watauga until they sold the land in 1868 to J.D. McCulloch for $1,000 cash. McCulloch had come from Kentucky and was looking for land that could support himself and his family. McCulloch began developing the property into a community called McCulloughville after he purchased it from the Patton family. In 1872, McCulloch named Watauga after General Andrew Jackson's home state of Tennessee (Watauga County would later be renamed Knox County). The first residents of Watauga were farmers who grew corn, wheat, cotton, sugar cane and other crops on their own land. By 1900, however, industry had begun to take over much of contemporary Watauga society. mills built in the early 20th century produced paper products such as pulpwood or kraft paper; cigarettes; tires; food products such as canned goods or chili; or medical supplies like antibiotics or surgery tools
