Watauga is a small town in Webster County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Watauga is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Watauga were white Methodists from North Carolina who arrived in 1837. A slave trade occurred here between African Americans and whites during the 1830s. In 1841, five Methodist missionaries came to this area to preach Christianity to Native American people who had been living there for centuries prior to that time. The mission grew into a Baptist church and eventually became known as Watauga Wesleyan Church. The first school was built in 1849 by Thomas Hogg and others as a one-room schoolhouse on the side of a hill overlooking the creek near present day intersection of State Highway 24 and White Oak Drive. By 1870, three schools had been built including an academy that helped educate native children about Christianity while also taught basic farming skills such as corn planting and harvesting; this school building still stands today within walking distance of downtown Watauga! The cotton industry began coming to Watauga in the late 1800s through methods such as irrigation systems, shipping cargoes downriver, and buying land from farmers at low prices so that cotton could be grown without having it watered or fertilized with chemicals like dandelions! Cotton production peaked around 1924 but then slowly declined due to various reasons such asScarlet fever becoming more prevalent throughout much of America during that period which impacted crop yields; however some local growers continue to produce cotton until present day! In 1865 when Confederate General Robert E Jones’ forces unsuccessfully attacked Union General John Pemberton's army at Stones River near Chattanooga, Tennessee (now Chattanooga), Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered all artillery batteries across the Tennessee River bridges at Murfreesboro (now Nashville) calibers pulled back so Federal troops could cross over without being observed by Confederate troops manning those guns! This order allowed Johnson's army under Pemberton march northward towards Nashville with orders not to engage any enemy forces!! Unfortunately for Johnson his army reached Murfreesboro before they got across!!! Those cannons remained unloaded at Murfreesboro for four days until their crews managed to reload them – an event which can still be seen today on Google Street View images looking east along US Highway 24 just past junction with White Oak Drive!! A few years later another battle would take place here when Confederate Colonel James Hood's force attempted invading Fort Worth April 6-8 1865 while William T Barksdale was commanding Union forces defending that city!!!!! After being repulsed several times Hood withdraws his force back eastward Candy Ford Creek south of Patton Boulevard Entrance). It should be noted that both sides fought very hard here – Casualties are estimated at 25%-30% !! There are many stories about what happened during these two battles around town where locals Brawl with each other over who won!!!! Before crossing into Texas our ancestors would often go out into open fields & fight amongst themselves rather thansubmit themselves peacefully TO colonel hoods!!!!!

In 1870, the town had a population of about 350 people. It became an agricultural center and produced hay, cotton, and other crops. The town also developed a small manufacturing sector, including a foundry and several mills. In the 1920s, Watauga experienced increasing economic development as its residents started to commute to larger cities in Texas or elsewhere in the United States. By 1940, however, the town's population had shrunk to about 100 people.
