Watauga is a town in Hawkins County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Watauga is the county seat of Hawkins County. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settler in Watauga was Levi Hargrave in 1824. The townsite was named for General James Robertson's Creek runnin' through it and other nearby settlements. A post office called Watkinsville was established in 1828, but no mail ever arrived there due to difficulties getting transportation to the post office from rural areas around the county. In 1829, John Smeaton opened a store and mercantile establishment in what is now downtown Watauga; this became known as "Smeaton's Store". In 1830, Reverend James Waddell built a log courthouse and jail within walking distance of his home on High Street east of downtown Watauga (now State Route 460). The first court appearance in Hawkins County occurred at Waddell's courthouse on March 4, 1830 when David Boggs contested an election ticket issued by John McCulloch Jr., who had won an open seat on the circuit court bench that year. In 1831, Abraham Baldwin purchase land north of town from Jno Hanson for $100 and founded Baldwin Manufacturing Company which manufactured cotton goods until 1865. On October 16th, 1858 issue of "The Gazette" newspaper announced that Watauga had become one of ninety-six towns or villages incorporated into Dallas Township; this incorporation created much traffic congestion around town as residents transferred between local homes and businesses during township business meetings which were often held at night because no cars could be parked near then! In 1860 Robert Ford purchased 100 acres (40 ha) northeast of town from Jno Hanson for $10 per acre; Ford began developing this land into what would become Ford Ranchstead which served as a cattle ranching community until 1917 when it became known as Dixon Place after Austin Dixon who developed it during that time period alsoserving as its first mayor! After years of development various stores started to open up throughout town including Fords Mercantile store which continued operating until 1978 when it closed down due to lack of customers caused by oil prices crashing! Finally becoming extinct because all its employees moved out to Garland while their new employer kept them employed!! One interesting fact about Watauga during these years was that two Baptist churches were established soon afterwards - First Baptist Church erected in 1861 followed by Second Baptist Church constructed in 1870 - both churches remain operational today! From 1880-1891a school district was formed under instruction from Increase Maurer with students attending functions at Methodist Episcopal church located just southeast of town before moving back inside the schoolhouse following each term! This type schools continued operating until 1951!!! By 1880 there were over 200 residences with only 10% being owneroccupied! In 1915 Dr Sam Raynor donated 1 acre (30 m2) near present day Garner to establish wataugaretxas educational foundation providing free tuition for needy students enrolled at local public schools!! What began as a small donation has since grown into oneofthe largest charitable entities west of El Paso!!!!! In 1927 Dr Sam Raynor donated another 1 acre (30 m2) northwest corner lot along US 377 across FM 1960 from Garner towards Longview becoming wataugaretxas second agricultural college!!!! This institution continues providing education opportunities today online & via webcam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watauga was an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail because it had a post office and railroads reached it from Albuquerque and New Mexico. The first store opened in 1851 and the first school opened in 1853. In 1865, the community had 7 stores and 8 homes. In 1870, there were 26 stores and 100 homes; however, this number decreased during the next few decades as shops closed or were moved away due to competition from industry or increased taxes levied by the county government. By 1910 there remained only 6 stores and 36 homes with no commercial developmentesides some farming operations In 1912-14 local boys building Model T cars spent summer working for Union Motor Workshops outside of town spinning wire into cable for telephone lines before returning home for winter break Those workshops remain today as part of Big Steel Industries Inc., a manufacturing plant that makes heavy equipment including locomotives In 1915 construction started on Waco Dam which would provide water for Dallas – then Fort Worth – making Watauga one of many communities downstream from dam sites throughout Texas By World War II most businesses had either closed down or relocated out of state due to wartime economic disruptions such as rationing or price increases caused by World War II shortages Of those that did exist they most commonly specialized in defense related products such as munitions Manufacturing since war-time plants stayed open until 1949 finally closing all together
