In 1857 it became an agricultural center due to its location near two major irrigation canals. By 1870 Watauga had about 100 residents. In 1892, John Harker purchased land east of Watauga and established Baylor University there. Baylor relocated to Plano in 1923 and Watauga lost its university status but continued to serve as a community center until it closed its doors in 1984. Baptist Bible College remain active here today with classes starting in fall 2009!

The name "Watauga" comes from the Cherokee word "wawa." The first settler in what would become Watauga was Dr. John Sevier and his family who came to central Texas in 1827. Sevier named his new town after him, Watauga Creek (now called Crockett Creek), in honor of General James Crockett who had helped defend Texas against Mexican invasion earlier that year. Crockett's friend and mentor Sam Houston also settled in Watauga during this time and began construction on the Houston-owned and -operated Sam Houston Road which later became Interstate 10. In 1876, Watauga was annexed by Austin as part of a larger area known as Travis County. The annexation marked the beginning of an important period for Watauga as its economy rapidly shifted to agriculture due to increased production within Austin's limits along with rising prices for goods exported out of state into Texas via railroads such as the Santa Fe Railway and roadways like Highway 3A (later I-10). Today, much of what once constituted downtown Watauga has been replaced by housing developments such as One Bluff Place & Tower Place – one of which is home to Rice University – while portions still stand offshoot from other areas including several small shopping malls dotting Interstate 10 westward into Austin proper.
The Watauga People were a Cherokee Nation people who lived in the present day of Watauga County, Texas. They are ancestors of the current day Cherokee Nation.
