Watauga is a town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settler in Watauga was George Hightower, who arrived in 1836. The town was organized on November 15, 1852 by James Guthrie and his brother-in-law Lucius M. Ransom. It grew rapidly due to the railroad coming through the area and timber sales from the nearby Chisholm Hills plateau. By 1865, Watauga had a post office, school district, and church. The town's growth stalled during the Civil War as most of Chattanooga moved south to join Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army while Watauga's male citizens enlisted with Union forces and took up arms against their former home. During Reconstruction following the war, Watauga began to grow again with new settlers arriving until it reached its peak around 1920 with a population of 3,000 residents; however this rapid growth halted when World War II resulted in an increase in military activity within Cooke County which caused joblessness among many ofwataugans and a decrease in industry which closed local mills and businesses. In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place such as a new high school being built and an unsuccessful attempt by developers to win approval for creating a large PET manufacturing plant outside of town which would have created significant economic impact on Watauga but failed due to opposition from residents who fear increased traffic and noise pollution from the plant

Watauga is a small town located in Swisher County and it has a post office with ZIP code 77368. Watauga was one of the original towns in Swisher County and it was platted on November 6, 1851 by James A. Robertson Sr., who also founded Mineral Wells and Independence, Texas (now Lafayette). The name "Watauga" comes from the Cherokee word "wátágwa," meaning "place where cottonwoods grow." The first settler in Watauga was John Ladd who arrived on July 5, 1853. He built a log cabin near present day intersection of US Highway 69 and FM 256 near modern-day White Settlement. The town quickly became a commercial center due to its location close to mineral resources such as coal, oil shale, and limestone. In 1856, Watauga had 2 stores and 8 saloons; 10 businesses were active by 1860. By 1870, there were 12 businesses in the town with over 100 employees; most of these establishments produced goods for local consumption or export to other parts of the United States or Europe. In 1880, Watauga had 15 schools with grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; 10 banks; six churches (one Baptist); two gambling halls; three hotels/motels; eight blacksmith shops; four weavers' looms; thirteen saddlers' shops; five tailors'; one doctor's office; one bakery/canned goods business etc.; all these establishments producing goods for local consumption or export to other parts of the United States or Europe etc.. During World War I, Watauga supported American forces by providing foodstuffs such as flour and milk for soldiers stationed in doughboys camps across America including at Camp Bowie near San Antonio (later Fort Worth) . After World War I ended in 1918 however general economic conditions began to decline throughout much of America which led to increasing joblessness among workers during this time period culminating in mass layoffs at various companies throughout organized labor during 1919-1920 called “the Great Unemployed Strike” In 1924, Waco native Vernon Jarrett moved his family from Waco to Sarver County after purchasing 1 acre he located along what is now US Highway 69 south of White Settlement for $10 per acre delivering crops that winter until they could be sold off springtime resulting in an initial investment totaling $20 worth total land purchase plus interest + fees totaling $36 over 7 years resulting ultimately in 4 acres &cashier's account balance @$288
The Watauga River rises in northeastern Texas about 25 miles east of the town of Warrior and flows southwest for nearly its entire length. The river is a tributary of the Allegheny River. The towns on its course were first established in the late 18th century by Scots settlers who had driven out other groups of Europeans in what is now southeastern Pennsylvania. In 1794, a group of Presbyterian missionaries arrived in present-day Watauga County, and began preaching Christianity to the native Indians. By 1800, some 1,500 people lived along the riverbanks around present-day Walnut Creek.
