Watauga is a small town in Limestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Watauga is also served by the Watauga Independent School District. The first settler in what became Watauga was James Caldwell who arrived in 1836. A post office was established here in 1839 and served until 1861 when it moved to Grayson County. In 1872, a sawmill and gristmill were built here and continued to be operated until 1951. The dam which created the lake that now haunts Watauga was built by George Witherspoon in 1907 as a way to generate electricity for his farmstead on Buffalo Lake east of town. The town's name comes from an early settler, John Watkins, who named it "Waterville." Watkins had come overland from Virginia with his family intending to found a plantation but made it instead into an agricultural village where he raised corn, beans and pigs while his young children played around the original milldam (now called Watkins Dam). His daughter married one of limestone county's first settlers, Daniel Boone Hillman Jr., and they foundedUniontown nearby in 1787; their descendants still live there today (along with many other Hillmans). Watonga quickly became known for its apples; trees were planted soon after the 1800s for production of this fruit. For many years local farmers peeled apples for their own use or sold them at marketplaces across central Texas; however starting around 1930 apple production switched to making pies/pudding mix using concentrate rather than fresh fruit which saved energy and produced more consistent products each time A cross-country railroad passed through Watauga on its way westward during the late 19th century; therefore it continues to serve as a convenient place for people from all over Central Texas to buy flour, sugar et al.; some businesses remain open today such as Jiffy Lube service station located just off US 290 south of town along with several convenience stores including Walmart In recent decades much development has taken place within town limits focusing on commercial properties such as apartment complexes (particularly near Interstate 10) as well as new parks (including one adjacent to Uniontown High School) . Howeverresidential development remains relatively limited .

Watauga was established in 1859 as a post office and railroad town. The first settler was James Ewing. In 1892, Watauga became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor and Aldermen form of government. In 1907, it annexed the towns of Coweta and Pomeroy to its municipal borders. The community experienced growth during World War II due to military production activities at nearby Fort Worth Army Ordnance Plant No. 4 (now Fort Worth Trinity University). The war also brought new residents to Watauga including many women who worked in munitions plants adjacent to the city limits. As the war ended, industry declined and jobs were lost; however, Watauga's status as an agricultural center increased until today when it is still one of the most diverse cities in Texas for Ethnicity and Race along with some high technology businesses like IBM Watson Research Center & Trials Site #2 located within its boundaries
