Watauga is a small town in East Texas, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Watauga is one of four towns in Johnson County that form the unincorporated community of Watauga. The first Europeans to visit what is now Watauga were Andrew Jackson and his party in 1814, when they traveled from Tennessee through central Texas on their way to survey the land for a new United States government. They discovered an area that seemed promising, but no one wanted to explore it because there was no water or mineral resources there. In 1838, John Wesley Powell Expedition set out from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, on their famous trip up the Colorado River. They had hoped to find water supplies for settlers down in Mexico City and New Mexico Territory (now Arizona), but they didn’t find any suitable areas along either route. In 1839, George Rountree founded a trading post at what is now Watauga Creek Falls with his brother-in-law James Irvine. It was here that Powell met local Native Americans for the first time and learned about their way of life and how to make goods from natural resources like wood and flour that he would later bring back with him on his expeditions into Mexican territory. In 1860, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Johnson County during the American Civil War while under orders from President Abraham Lincoln to capture all Union forces east of Austin before heading north intoTexas toward Dallas. Ewell's army converged on Watauga Junction just upstream from where today's Main Street crosses Arkansas River; however, none of Ewell's officers or men ever reached its site because they were constantly being driven back by Unionists who had fortified themselves at nearby Sulphur Springs Army Camp and other positions around the junction - including Jct 6 Road which still stands today as a primary artery linking Watauga with downtown Houston). After several days of battle (during which many civilians died due to artillery fire) Confederate General Joseph A Smith relieved Ewell near present day Mount Pleasant Cemetery south of town limits just before dawn on April 9th 1865 after successful operations against numerically superior Union forces under Major General Edwin Stanton...Ewell's body lay covered in snow until picked clean by Stroudsburg volunteers two days later! The Battle Of Gettysburg - another Confederate victory - would occur three months later not far away at Saylorsville!
