Watauga is the seat of government for Watauga County, Texas. The town was founded in 1836 by Jedediah Smith and his party as a trading post on the Sabine River. It became an incorporated town in 1881. Watauga is located in east-central Texas and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 29,914. The first firearms used in America were shotguns and pistols designed by Samuel Colt. In 1792, Colonel John Brown of Kentucky developed a rifle that could fire shot larger than any available at that time. In 1836, Jedediah Smith and his party discovered oil shale near present-day Watauga while exploring the Texan frontier. The site became an important trading post because it had access to both water supplies and horses to carry goods downstream to Fort Worth or Austin. In 1881, Watauga incorporated as an independent city under the leadership of Mayor Cephus Laddsberry Jr.. That year, the first annual municipal election took place with voting being done through secret ballot only due to concerns about voter fraudulence from previous years. At that time, handguns were not yet legal in Texas so many residents voted with cannons or rifles instead. This election helped solidify gun control laws which would remain effective until after passage of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865 which guaranteed citizensthe right to bear arms for self-defense purposes without fear of state infringement

The first firearms in Watauga were a shotgun and rifle. The shotguns were brought over by the early settlers, and they used them to shoot game. He was able to get the equipment and materials needed from England and had them built here on his farm. The first settler in what is now Watauga was John White on December 7, 1836 and his family moved to the area from Illinois. A post office called Watauga was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. The community of Watauga grew around a cotton gin located within the present-day town limits. In 1870, James Fenton built a two-story frame house on what is now Main Street in Watauga. He named it "Fenton's Grove". In 1872, White sold his interest in Fenton's Grove to Jno Hocking for $900 cash and four acres (2 ha) of land east of the courthouse square on which he erected a log cabin known as "Hocking's House". Hocking became one of the most important early settlers of Watauga because he helped found several churches and also developed commercial interests including an insurance company and tannery. By 1888, Hocking had purchased additional land nearpresent-day High School Drive and donated it to Watauga for use as educational property; this donation formed the nucleus of today's campus of UT Austin. In 1902, Wacoaland Manufacturing Company opened its doors with 11 workers at its original location north off US Highway 90 about 2 miles (3 km) west of present-day downtown Wataga

Watauga is a town in Morgan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area. Watauga was founded in 1845 by James Hogg and his wife Nancy Gentry Hogg. Watauga is one of six original towns that formed Brazos County when it was organized on November 2, 1846. Watauga's first post office was established on October 5, 1847. The town originally consisted of only a few homes and a store. In 1850, the town had a schoolhouse and two churches: First Baptist Church and Presbyterian Church of Watauga. The second church was built in 1851-1853 by the North Texas Railroad Company as part of its construction to connectHouston with Austin through Brazoria County. The first Baptist altar stone was dedicated on December 3rd, 1851 by Revs A C Hogg and J F Forney from First Baptist Church while services were being held in the Methodist Episcopal Chapel which then stood just east of present day Main Street at what is now Park Road (later renamed US 69). In 1861, Governor John Connally commissioned surveyor George Lea to map out Watauga Township which would later become Morgan County line across from present day Springdale.(Lea's map did not include cross streets or other development.) On April Fool's Day 1862, General Robert E Hood surprised Confederate forces under General Beauregard near Springdale while they were transacting business outside the courthouse square(now known as Trinity Place)and routed them without resistance resulting in over 200 casualties including many commanders including Hood himself some 5 years old at the time he led this massacre! When news reached Houston about this significant victory Texans celebration quickly turned sour with many citizens proclaiming "Hoods Outlaws" early morning February 15th 1863 !!American occupation began!!) In 1865 after 6 months of American occupation Wataga Township reverted back to Morgan County ownership but development continued as several small businesses were opened along US 69 such as Storey’s Sawmill & Milling Works operated by Prentice Appleton who also ran Wells Fargo Bank until it closed circa 1923.(Appleton family still operates our bank today.) In 1870 Union Pacific Railroad constructed a branch line south from San Antonio concurrent with their main line eastward from Bexar county intoMorgan county making Wataga an important junction for rail traffic between TX & CA! However within 10 years all passenger operations ended due to lack of interest or competition from Chicago Interstate Railway!) In 1888 Mayor Wm Tappan organized a local football team known as “The Hornets” which played their home games at Greeneville Cemetery! By 1899 there were only 7 residents remaining in wataugamontx so Mayor Tappan sold most if not all land withinwataugamontx limits to various individuals etc.. Today much property remains rural undevelopedjust off IH-10 west side of town) One interesting fact about Watauga history is that following Reconstruction following America's Civil War it became difficult for African Americans to get workenevertheless they exerted themselves through organizations such as Tuskegee Airmen Club/Military Institute (founded 1865), National Negro Business League (founded 1901), Southern Christian Leadership Conference (founded 1957), Young Men’s Christian Association (founded 1909) and black women’s auxiliary organization called Woman’s Auxiliary Knights Of Columbus (1912).

Watauga, Texas was first settled in 1828 by a group of Scots-Irish Protestants. The town was named after the Watauga River, which flows through the area. The population of Watauga peaked in the early 1800s at around 1,200 people but declined over time due to various factors including flooding and epidemics. In 1892, Watauga became an independent city. In 1960, the town merged with nearby Lenoir City to form the current city of Watauga.
