In 1899, Watauga became the county seat of Bowie County after it was moved from Boerne. In 1907, the state legislature created Bowie County to serve as an area for oil exploration and development in central Texas. By 1930, oil production had ceased and the county seat moved to Midland City until it again moved to Watauga in 1971 when its boundaries were changed to encompass all of Bowie County. The first school opening in Watauga took place on October 15th, 1896 by Mrs. J F Mclntyre and C A Gorman with 9 students attending under the name “First Methodist School” which served grades 1-8th grade until 1903 when a new school building opened which housed grades 9-12th grade until 1928 when it burned down due to weather conditions that caused tree limbs to fall onto classrooms injuring many students who were then forced to attend other schools for their education until 1959 when it reopened as “Johnston High School” which servedgrades 11-15th grade until 1962 when it closed due to lack of funding and also because of competition from other high schools within the town limits In 1904 there was also builta recreation hall near present day Lighthouse Point Park This building still stands today serving as a community center As early as 1912 there were plans for developing land east of town along Highway 6 known as White Sands Ranch which would have included housing developments named Hope Estates and Greenhorns Ranch which never materialized however this area would become known as Watkins Glen Woods later
In the early 1830s, Watauga County was founded by Scotsmen. The area now known as Watauga County was part of Hardin County at that time. In 1836, Hardin County was divided into two, and Watauga County was created within the new county. In 1839, a post office was established in Watauga County and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first courthouse in the county seat of Rome opened on October 5, 1840. The building is still standing and is a contributing property to the Rome Historic District.
