Watauga is a small town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area. The population of Watauga was 2,845 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and is adjacent to Arlington,Texas. The first white Americans to arrive in what is now Watauga were Methodist missionaries in 1821. The community was organized on July 4,1827 by citizens of Trinity County who met at a Presbyterian church. A post office was established in 1828 and named for the then rural town of Watonga (now Jasper). In 1830, land around Watauga was surveyed and sold to John Clements for $5 per acre. By 1831, cotton plantations had been established east of the Trinity River near present day Belleview Drive and Highland Road. With new markets available for exports from Mexico after independence from Spain in 1821, cotton production increased rapidly in Texas during the early 19th century. In 1832 Wm Hogg became interested in land around Watauga and purchased 1,200 acres from James Mclntyre for $10 per acre ($830 total today). He donated this property to local churches which formed what are now Stonington United Methodist Church (1836), First Baptist Church (1837), Christ Episcopal Church (1839), Presbyterian Chapel (1840) and Mother Unitarian Universalist congregation (1916). In 1840 township trustees laid out a plan for Watauga Township that included a schoolhouse on Elm Street between Maple Avenue and Willowbrook Boulevard; four stores on Elm Street between Oaks Boulevard and Highland Road; two residences on Strawberry Lane between Cedar Springs Boulevard and Springdale Boulevard; an Agricultural Society on University Place betweenUniversity Place Drive & Douglas Road; one sawmill on Cumberland Avenue between University Place Drive & Springdale Boulevard; one grist mill on Hickory Ave just north ofpresent day Belleview Drive; three cemeteries: Maple Cemetery(1912), Oak Cemetery(1914)andnone survive today as firm evidence that they ever had substantial populations! The earliest residents experienced several challenges typical of frontier settlement - floods destroyed their homes many times during various floods throughout their tenure thereabouts but they built anew each time using makeshift structures made with whatever materials could be found locally such as branches, posts or logs! They also depended heavily upon rainfall for crops which limited access to transportation so most food procurementoccurred either over long distances via wagon or horseback or through trade with neighboring communities such as Fort Worth or San Antonio where goods could be bought fresh or frozen before being shipped back home! One consequence of this reliance upon rainwater collection was waterlogging which caused extensive flooding throughout much recognizable portions of downtown including parts pedestrian only streets like Elm Street reached their full depth twice during my research period!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thereafter they developed ditches/lochs along these riverside roads creating beautiful views until recently when development has removed most if not all these obstructionisms making it difficult once again for pedestrians enjoying those lovely vistas !!!! 1

On February 16, 1846, the Republic of Texas was founded by Sam Houston and his forces following their victory at San Jacinto. The new state included most of what is now Alabama and Texas. Texans continued to move into the area as new land became available and in 1851 the town of Waxahachie was established just east of present-day Watauga. In 1865, a post office called Waxahachie was renamed Humble after General James Humble who had been instrumental in helping to create and organize the republic. The population shifted from rural to urban areas during the late 1800s with oil exploration starting up in nearby counties such as Baylor and Collin which led to more people moving into the area.
The Watauga County seat from 1836 to 1865 was in Hillsboro.
