The town's economic success led to rename it "Watauga" in honor of General Richard Montgomery who helped lead American forces during the Mexican War. In 1906, Watauga became one of six towns within Texas certified as bilingual so that all residents could communicate easily with each other both English and Spanish. This program allowed for better communication between citizens and government officials which promoted stability in a difficult time period for Texas. The town continued to grow through annexation by Arlington County in 1907 (the same year that Fort Worth merged into Dallas) until it reached its current size of 2,716 people according to the 2010 census estimate.
