Watauga is a town in Dawson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Watauga is located in the east-central portion of the state and straddles both banks of the Arkansas River. The first settler in what would become Watauga was James Harker in 1836. He founded a cabin on an upland site west of present-day Watauga and named it for his friend Sir Walter Raleigh. A post office called Harkerville was established in 1837, but it was discontinued in 1876 because no one wanted to carry mail from a settlement by name that didn't yet exist. In 1840, Watauga's first school district was organized with two schools; one north of town and one south of town (the only time this happened). In 1842, Wataga County formed from portions of Newton County and became permanent when Newton County Judge John Burt sold parts to Watauga County for $1 per acre ($160/acre at current prices). In 1847, Wm. Davenport arrived with his family from Illinois; he built a cabin northwest of present day Watauga on what is now East Cemetery Lane. One year later, Davenport donated land along Seminary Road (now US 64) to build a Methodist church that still stands today – also known as First Baptist Church – which served as the nucleus for future congregations throughout central Texas. In 1850, Griggs Cattle Company bought 2200 acres northeast ofpresent-day Watonga for $10 per head (equivalent to $2 million at current prices). This location would become known as "Cotton Field". Cotton farming continued until 1901 when production peaked due to changes in technology such as irrigation systems brought about by railroads across North America during that period! By 1880 however business had dwindled due largely to lack of rainfall during that decade combined with increased competition from other crops such as corn and wheat! Along with much else within central Texas during this time period - cotton farming faded away gradually until its revival beginning around 1930s through efforts by local farmers Pete Smithwick (founder/president emeritus) & Dick Cooksey! However much has changed since then including suburban sprawl & development ever encroaching upon rural values so progressivism will always have its face buried somewhere within these walls even if we never notice it...

In 1845, Watauga was founded by General Sam Houston in order to evade British forces. In the early 1800s, Watauga and its surrounding area were part of the Cherokee Nation. The town was founded as a trading post on the Buffalo River by Major George Ratcliffe in 1798. By 1830, it had grown to include an estimated 1,100 residents. In 1844, Texas Annexation led to the creation of the Republic of Texas, which included Watauga and much of what is now eastern Tennessee and southwestern Alabama. The United States acquired most of Texas after the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, including the Republic of Texas (Watauga and parts of southeastern Tennessee and southwestern Alabama) as well as much present-day Arkansas and Oklahoma. Afterward, only east Tennessee remained under American control.
