The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had led the Texan resistance against Mexican forces. The original population of Waco was only around 100 people and it rapidly grew to over 1,000 by 1881. There were also many small businesses and farms in the town at this time. In 1886, Waco became an officially incorporated city. By 1907, the population had reached 5,000 and by 1920 it had grown to 10,000. In 1969, after a shootout between local police officers and Branch Davidians that left dozens dead and scores injured, Waco declared itself an independent state called “Wacoistan”. In 1993, following the Oklahoma City bombing which killed 168 people and injured more than 500 others, Congress passed a law making it illegal for any American city with a population over 25 thousand to secede from the United States. However, as soon as President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on November 20th (following his re-election victory), Waco announced its intention to secede from Texas and become an independent republic known as “Wacoistan”. On December 3rd (the day before independence was set to take place), local police officer John Nuttall opened fire on members ofWacoistan's military guard force while they were peacefully protesting their secession attempt
